More sunshine and beautiful temperatures always means an influx of people. If you add the increase of companies choosing to build their latest venture in a state with affordable opportunities, the number of people you see increases even more. The increase can be seen on the roadways and the sidewalks as people venture out to the latest restaurant or entertainment location.

While this increase can be seen as a great thing in many aspects, it also means a possibility of an increase in accidents. Various studies such as those with the National Safety Council and the NHTSA show that there has been an increase in pedestrian accidents, often times ending in a fatality.

It has always been known to be an issue of those walking to be struck and killed by drivers. It is even more shocking how much it has increased in the past couple years, despite the fewer vehicles on the road due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The GHSA reports that while states can greatly differ in fatalities, Arizona is considered to be one of the top seven states which accounted for more than half of all pedestrian deaths.

There are many reasons of why the increase could be occurring. Vehicles are getting larger which could be causing more severe impacts. Some reports claim an increase in accidents occurring at night which could be contributed to impairment, alcohol or physical, or even inability to distinguish due to dark clothing worn versus areas not well lit. Weather temperatures can also be a contributing factor as nice temps usually lead to more people being outside.

Most organizations are calling for better policies from local governments in an effort to curb these rising numbers. Some are calling for better enforcement of traffic laws, which in turn could mean an increase in law enforcement officers.

If you decide to go for a bike ride or take a stroll along the sidewalk, make sure you are being aware of your surroundings. Don’t assume that drivers will always stop and give you the right of way. If you decide to venture out when the sun is not as bright, make sure to wear bright or reflective coloring to better enhance your chances of being seen.
